Picking The Right Book
In third grade, we encourage students to begin reading more challenging chapter books. In order to choose books at your child's independent reading level, have your child try the "Five-Finger Test":
- Choose a book.
- Look at a page in the middle.
- Put one finger up for every word you can't read or don't understand.
- If you have five fingers up, you will need to try a different book. If you have fewer than five fingers up, the book is "just right"!
Reading comprehension
Your child should be reading for 20 to 30 minutes each night as part of their homework. I've attached a list of questions you can ask your child about their nightly reading and reading comprehension strategies that we will be learning throughout the school year.

Lexile Measures
Students will be given a Lexile measure by taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) several times throughout the school year. This reading test measures how difficult a text is and a students' reading ability, with an emphasis on vocabulary. The Lexile level will always be shown as a number with an “L” after it (e.g. 770L = 770 Lexile). The higher the Lexile measure, the higher your child's reading level. The highest possible measure is 2000L and anything below 5L is assessed as a BR or Beginning Reader.
In third grade, to be considered a "proficient" reader, your child should score between a range of 575-744. You can visit the following websites to look up a books' the Lexile level:
